The Bible is the inspired Word of God. It was written in human language, grammar, and a variety of literary genres for human understanding, with narrative comprising about two-thirds of the Bible. A preacher who is called to the task of preaching God's Word to his listeners, is not one who presents his own ideas, values, and ideologies, but rather one who communicates the words of the Bible, the record of God's heart and will for His people. Therefore, the preacher’s sermon must be prepared as guided by the biblical text. Therefore, in order to understand the message of the Bible, a study of the characteristics of biblical narrative and the use of literary devices is necessary. The aim of this paper is to present how biblical authors convey the meaning of Old Testament narratives through plot and characterization. Therefore, using the narrative of Samson and Delilah written in Judges 16:4-22 as an example, this paper will demonstrate that through the plot of the narrative and the negative characterization of Samson within the plot, the author of Judges seeks to convey the message that Samson, who was called to be a Nazarite, was an unfaithful Israelite who took God’s mission lightly and did what was right in his own mind.
