In the decline and crisis of the pulpit today, it is worthwhile to examine the preaching of great preachers. Research on their principles and methods in preaching can help to diagnose properly the problems of the present and provide a meaningful insight for the today’s pulpit. The comparative study on principles and methods in preaching of Charles Spurgeon and Martyn Lloyd-Jones have special significance in that it has never been explored in such detail previously. Although Spurgeon and Lloyd-Jones preached to different congregations in different eras, they both commonly shared a high regard for preaching, a strong identity as preachers, a profound commitment to study the bible, and an effective delivery. However, they were very different in delivery methods. Despite the fact that both of their preaching essentially centered on logic and reasoning, they made use of their own methods. Lloyd-Jones preached by logical and analytical methods based on his medical training, whereas Spurgeon mainly used his creative methods such as picture language, sense appeal, and dramatism to help the congregation to experience the message. In addition, the historical and social contexts of their time partly contributed to their success in preaching.
