Digital worship has been accepted as a new mode of worship for contemporary Christian communities. Christian worship is a crucial place in which media technology and faith formation are intertwined. How then does digital worship shape the faith of worshipers? This article neither intends to undergird the validity of digital worship nor efforts to provide support of avoiding the practice of digital worship. This article rather attempts to clarify the pastoral task of digital worship by reflecting theological issues of worship in digital technology. Digital worship helps worshipers fostering the connection between each other and provides a new possibility of worshiping God. Yet, worshipers’ mere connectivity neither guarantee the holistic experience of community nor automatically turn the substantial experience into the embodied participation in the presence of God. In this challenging context of digital worship, pastors are required to take more responsibility of forming the worshipers based on theological reflection. An appropriate theological approach to digital worship can be found in the sacramental theology. Although it cannot be counted as an element of sacraments when it comes to the presence of God, digital worship presents the centrality of experiencing the presence of God by providing a new space of encountering God. In this new and inevitable context of worship, pastors are expected to faithfully serve the congregation by (1) providing more careful hospitality for those who have difficulty to access to the virtual space, (2) leading them not to merely new experience of worship but to establish sound relationship with God, (3) organizing the practice of worship as a structure of conversation between God and worshipers, (4) helping them not to show a limited part of their lives through the screen with hiding themselves, and (5) guiding them to take digital worship as a temporary and limited experience of glorifying God.
